PRAXIS.

Praxis, the British writer Fay Weldon tells us, is Greek for action, turning point, and orgasm, and Praxis Duveen's long life includes a generous supply of all those things. At present old, poor, barely able to hobble about her basement apartment and to scribble these memoirs, Praxis has been at various times Willie the student's common-law drudge, a prostitute, Ivor the businessman's suburban doll-wife, Philip the film maker's glamorous working wife, mother of two, stepmother of three, a highly paid copywriter of ads glorifying the stay-at-home wife and a famous feminist leader. She has committed adultery, incest and infanticide, for which last she spent two years in jail. She has been raped. As a child she was the horrified witness of her father's violence, her mother's madness. In fact, into these 251 pages Fay Weldon has managed to cram at least one instance of just about every kind of manipulation and aggression that men use to get women where they want them, and just about every nuance of guilt and passivity that keeps women there.

Praxis focuses on a character who rarely exercises her Free Will.
